Elementary Classes
MONDAYS
Draw The Line “Everyone knows that even a single line can convey emotion” – Piet Mondrian In this Drawing class, we will explore contour drawing, shading, shadow and light, as well as the more creative aspects of visual language such as story telling and imaginary landscapes. We will explore composition and rendering through various drawing methods and materials.

Making Puppets In this class, young artists will learn the art of small scale puppetry. Participants will develop a character and then sculpt it from polymer clay, create moving parts, paint it, dress it and bring it to life!

TUESDAYS
Chess Club I Chess is fun and accessible, and has been shown to greatly benefit a child’s development – most notably in problem solving skills, creativity, and sportsmanship. Participants in this class will learn to play chess and have the opportunity to practice during class time as well as participate in up to three chess tournaments over the course of the semester. (Note: the class is divided into two sessions to allow students to participate in a full or half semester. All levels welcome in each session.)

Fabulous Photography! In this class, children will learn about light and composition as they shoot digital photographs using both indoor and outdoor settings. Students will learn to capture, manipulate and print photos using iPhoto and Adobe Photoshop Express and will create a final project in the form of a greeting card or framable 5x7 print.

Very Cool Videography Students will learn the basics of video composition, lighting, capturing and editing. A short video will be produced using Apple’s iMovie software.

WEDNESDAYS
Adventures in Weaving In this class, students will learn about traditions around weaving, as well as basic weaving technique. Then they will explore alternate materials to create unique and functional artworks. Young artists will weave with combinations of braided fabric scraps, ribbons, finger woven yarn, plastic bags, newspapers and more!

Lights On! In this class we will explore the behaviors of light waves: iridescence, reflection, refraction, and absorption. We will learn about: iridescence in nature, and the role of iridescence and mirrors in the art objects of indigenous cultures, lightning, static electricity, photosynthesis, additive color mixing, and bioluminescence. We will make prisms, sun prints, kaleidoscopes, additive color wheels, work with glitter and sequins, and paint with bubbles.

Hip Hop Dance, Art and Culture I Remember when Hip Hop was about community, respect and positive expression? Albert and Mario are here to preserve this culture and pass it on to the youth of today! This class gives students the chance to learn break dancing, poetry, art, and the positive history of hip hop culture. The instructors focus on teaching confidence so young people can express themselves. All of the work is age appropriate and includes teamwork and group activities. (Note: the class is divided into two sessions to allow students to participate in a full or half semester. All levels welcome in each session.)

Bangles, Baubles and Beads! Students will explore a variety of jewelry techniques – basic bead stringing, paper bead making, wire wrapping, found object and decoupage jewelry. We will experiment with color, balance, texture and pattern. Projects will include necklace, bracelet and earring sets, ready-to-wear pendants, and beads to take home for future projects! This class will be loved by boys and girls alike!

Introduction to Moving Image Art Basement Films As New Mexico imagines itself as a new, world-class media center, it is important to think creatively and imaginatively about our expectations of what a movie “should” be. In this hands-on workshop students will be introduced to alternative media histories and traditions. Then participants will be given the opportunity to flex their own “media muscles” and create moving image art (movies) in ways we never imagined possible!

Making Theater In this class, students will learn the basic elements in play-making. Students will practice dramatic structure, character exploration, and teamwork through a series of fun games and exercises. Over the course of 9 weeks, students will work together in a community to create an original play.

Dance Like No One’s Looking: A Class in Creative Movement Children will explore movement, rhythm, and creative expression in this class. The class will consist of games, movement exercises, and telling a story through movement and song.

Dada Do! A Class In Creative Collage Children will be introduced to collage with a variety of materials, including fabric, paper, and recycled items. Projects will include free exploration of collage with different media, combining collage and free drawing, and embellishing a collaged surface with painting and stamping. The class will include individual and collaborative projects.

Making Theater In this class, students will explore communicating ideas through their bodies and voices. Students will play fun games that help them master early expression techniques that build toward a solid acting foundation. Students will be encouraged to explore their own creative inspirations. Over the course of 6 meetings the students will present a story demonstration of techniques practiced in class.
